US Rangers Remembered – 80 Years On

The 1st US Rangers Battalion was activated in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, on 19 June 1942.

Exhibition and Seminar

To commemorate the 80th anniversary, there is a temporary exhibition (until 28 September 2022) in Carrickfergus Civic Centre.

Additionally, the Town Hall will be the location for a Seminar entitled ‘Perceptions and portrayals: American troops and wartime Northern Ireland’ on the morning of 20 August 2022.

Speakers include;

🇺🇸 Myself, covering the early days of the 1st Battalion, and the significance of the Dieppe Raid on the Rangers

🇺🇸 Orla Fitzpatrick from the National Museum of Ireland on “The Pocket Guide to Northern Ireland”, produced by the US Army to help soldiers integrate into local society

🇺🇸 Alan Freeburn from the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum about the museum’s collections and projects

🇺🇸 Shirin Murphy from Carrickfergus Museum who will conclude the seminar, lead a panel discussion, and allow for questions or comments from the audience.

Guided Tour

I will be conducting a bespoke version of my Guided Tour on that afternoon. This Tour will include (subject to change) visiting the town’s last remaining Air Raid Shelter, the location of a Tank Factory, the Belgian Army Commemoration Stone, the site of a wartime Military Prison & Detention Centre, Barn Mills (former site of a large factory put to use during WW2), and the US Rangers Museum.

Places on the Seminar and/or the Tour must be booked in advance here. If you book a place on both the Seminar and the Tour, lunch is provided.
